Anne Margrethe Bredal (Anna Margreta Bredalina, 1655-1729) was the daughter of a parish pastor, who took it upon himself to educate her, and she had talent! A woman with a classical education was a rarity at this time and a phaenomenon of interest. Contemporary catalogues of learned women praise Bredal for her proficiency in Latin especially, but in her case we also have two primary sources: an oration in praise of King Christian V published in 1671, when she was 16, and a letter in manuscript dated 15 May 1703, in which she describes her education and way through life. In my talk, I will look at Bredal’s self-representation in the letter as well as the self-reflective passages of the oration. How does she perform her learning and how does she describe her education in relation to factors such as gender, social position, and religion?
