In the beginning of the 17th century, the southeastern part of Jutland experienced a series of wars and occupations by both enemies and allies. The wars brought enormous human and physical destruction, and in some areas, around 40% of the population was killed by either war, starvation, or epidemics. Chaos was total during this period, but how did people mentally deal with it? In this presentation, I will discuss how religion served as an anchor for the population during the wars, how the elite framed chaos as divine punishment, and whether there were other interpretations of the wars beyond the religious.
