This seminar explores different aspects of early modern cultures of work and poverty, focusing on the 18th century. The themes of the speakers will move from the financial investments by charitable institutions in Augsburg to the strategies of escaped convicts and poor relief authorities in Denmark. The seminar will touch upon issues such as the role of religious views, financial investments in education and labor, poor people’s survival strategies and the state’s efforts to educate beggars to live working lives. By looking at the activities of people from different social strata, this seminar encourages broader reflections on the understanding of and connections between work, discipline, poverty and charity.
The seminar is organized by Ph.D. student (and LUMEN-member) Maria Nørby Pedersen and Associate Professor of history Jeppe Büchert Netterstrøm.
